Translation and cross-culture

At least two languages and two cultural backgrounds are inevitable in translation. According to Kate James, an authority in translation, the issue of how to handle cultural aspects, implicit in a text, confronts all translators all the time. They have to think about how to usefully convey these aspects in the target language. And this hurdle varies in scope according to the cultural and linguistic gap between the languages concerned. A key consideration is to decide how much missing background information the translator should present. Read Kate's article.

Arabs moving to an Anglo-Celtic setting

The Middle Eastern speaker of English freshly settled in cities such as London, New York or Sydney commonly experiences certain misunderstandings. What are they and how can we make sure meaning is shared in communication? This article by Tony Corballis briefly discusses the issues and answers.

The Center for Liberty in the Middle East

CLIME is a transatlantic initiative to promote liberal democratic values in the Middle East by: fostering cooperation between Europe, the US and other democracies to support Middle Eastern liberal democrats; raising the profile of liberal democrats from the Middle East with policy makers, government officials and media in Europe and the US and building support for reform policies; conducting programs to disseminate liberal democratic concepts of representative government, rule of law, pluralism, religious freedom and individual rights through local partnerships. Tony Corballis is a friend of one of the Senior Fellows, Kairi Abaza, and supports the ideals of CLIME.

Impact

Lots of people say first impressions matter. Indeed, academics and psychologists who study this kind of stuff, say that people take about a nano-second to make up their minds on meeting someone new. You may call it a snap judgement; the Impact Factory thinks it's more about the impact you make, and whether it's the one you want to make. So, what is impact? Read Jo Ellen Grzyb and Robin Chandler's article on personal impact. Tony Corballis has trained under Robin Chandler.

Mastery of the language

As a fluent English speaker or rusty bilingual, you don't need to be satisfied with second best. Read the advice of Dilshad Abdulla, an Italian-speaking Asian Somali, who recently graduated from Oxford University. In his article How to Master the English Language, he talks about his experiences and offers useful pointers for advanced learners.

Why businesses need migrants
