Lexis Building Club

Words, words and more words - but what is lexis?

With more fluent English, the less you think about grammar and structure, and more about vocabulary and meaning (lexis), including the patterns, word-combinations, sayings and metaphors that colour fluent English.

Why should lexis matter to me?

Studies have shown that a strong command of lexis is linked to success.

FACT: Research demonstrates that executives score higher on lexical tests than their subordinates do. Research of supervisory and executive personnel in 39 companies by academic Johnson O'Connor found a correlation between lexical ability and status on the corporate hierarchy. He showed that presidents and vice presidents averaged 87%, managers 62%, foremen 41%, and floor bosses 32%. Similar studies show a correlation between lexis and salary levels! Clearly, success depends on your ability to express yourself. The world's top achievers typically have a rich lexis. Not just able or good, they are better.

The truth in business is that people judge you by how you communicate. Whether they are right or not, what you say seems to reflect your education, intelligence and class in society. A rich, crystal-clear use of the English language gives a great impression.

Lexis building clubs

You don't need to feel embarrassed struggling for the right words. Take control. Lexis building clubs help advanced speakers of English become inspiring, confident and expressive bilinguals. They take place in central London, near Edgware Road from 6.30 to 8.30pm on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, with snacks included. The max size is eight people. First-timers may try it out and only pay if they are satisfied by the end of the first session. If not delighted, they can leave without paying.

You will:

  • Strengthen customer and colleague relationships
  • Boost your career and gain a winning edge over others
  • Speak comfortably with anyone at any level
  • Increase your confidence and have greater credibility
  • Have impact in appraisals, presentations and interviews

What the clubs do NOT do

We will not simply load you with complex words; no bulk memorising. You apply the vocab to real situations, to make the language top-of-mind. We work with meaning, word forms, pronunciation, and most of all, its real-world context.

Nor will it mean people will find you pompous and condescending. The truth is that much complex vocabulary can make you sound pretentious and silly. The balance is knowing the right collocations (how and when to use them) and the right words (many words in your dictionary are rarely used in real life).

It's about choosing the right word at the right time: for persuasion; for impact.

Interesting, stimulating and (most of all) FUN

Most importantly, in your lexis building clubs with Tony Corballis, each session has a central theme with everyone involved: something from the news, film, politics, current affairs and debate, the environment, relationships, personal or leadership development, etc. You are never bored, always involved mentally and verbally.

"I never realised expanding my communication skills could be so much fun!"
- Florence Lecuyer, Marketing Manager at Amazon.com

Lexis building clubs tend to run in the spring and summer months. Contact Tony Corballis to join or sign up on a waiting list.
Alternatively, start your own club with EloquentEnglish™ training.
