How it works

How does it work? Simply follow these five easy steps.

1. You email your name, country and first language to us, with a copy of your text attached. Tell us what your document is for and the deadline.

2. If it's part of a reasonable sized job, we edit the first 250 words to return to you, NO CHARGE. We promise to reply within 24 hours but you are under no obligation.

3. If you are happy with the editing, you pay for the rest.

4. We edit the remaining text.

5. When payment is received, we email it back to you.

*Students, please note that we actively discourage plagiarism. Please include a copy of the assignment question, the assessment criteria and (in the case of a thesis, dissertation or other major assessed item) your university's guidelines on plagiarism and originality. These may need to be discussed with your editor and we reserve the right to decline jobs that we consider to be plagiarism.

Why choose English Rewrite?

Absolutely essential

Even fluent English speakers make mistakes. Your first language produces interference in your written English. We are trained and experienced in picking it up and understanding what you mean to say. We are trained to identify syntactical, grammatical, stylistic, formatting and typographical errors. We are experienced in all normal written genres.

Makes money sense

Transactions are safe and you have a variety of payment choices. There are no extra costs and you "try before you buy": where the trial sample is part of a larger text the first 250 words are edited free so you can check the quality of our work before you pay.

Dedicated experts

Our team is specialist: we are competent editing professionals with the business knowledge and linguistic expertise to help you. We have extensive experience in mentoring professionals and personally dealing with individuals from Asia, Africa, Europe and South America. We love having such an international focus and are well aware of cross-cultural matters that affect our multi and bilingual clients. We are trained in identifying cultural references and assumptions that look unusual in written English. We are well educated, knowledgeable, and worldly so we approach your ideas and content in an educated manner.

Ethical and safe

Your work and records are strictly confidential. We fully respect your privacy and therefore, for publishing, submission or intellectual property reasons, we promise that no one but your editor will ever see your text, and editors have formally agreed never to divulge any information or personal details to any third party. We are sincere in our intention to keep on building our reputation for honesty, efficiency and being useful to those who need us.

Rates and payment (quoted in GBP pence)

English proofreading service 1 to 4p / word

Proofreading and correcting sentence level grammar, punctuation, spelling, typos, basic word choice, paragraphing, referencing and basic writing style. We comb your text and remove the errors to create word-perfect English.

English editing service 4 to 8p / word

Proofreading and correcting as for the English proofreading service above, but with further alterations and comments on meaning, impact, register, style, cohesion, logic, more sophisticated paragraphing and document formatting. We make your text make better sense. Editing typically takes four times as long as proofreading.

Premium service 8 to 20p / word

Full proofreading and editing of both the above services, but also revision and reorganisation of the text. It may include some collaboration or co-writing of drafts. We ensure your text delivers meaning in a professional and intelligent way, without compromising the original 'voice' of your text. The premium service can take longer depending on the nature of your text.

Copywriting or commissioned writing 8 to 20p / word

Writing original work or writing based on extracting detail from source documents. Texts can be tailored to your specific needs and can follow the writing style you require, and be strategically crafted to best achieve the goals of the text.

Express service (price negotiable)

Many jobs can be completed within 48 hours if they are urgent. Rates for proofreading or editing at express service speed are normally charged as premium service. Premium services, copywriting or commissioned writing done at express service speed are normally charged at double. This may vary according to editor workload and may be higher.

Rates are charged on the number of words you submit. Jobs over 10 000 words from established or known clients receive a discount. Alternatively, an hourly rate can be agreed, which many clients prefer. We can provide you with a quote if you submit us your text. Note: some texts require a certain level of service more than others. In some cases, rates may have to be negotiated.

Editing and writing terms and conditions

Completed texts are returned on full receipt or proof of payment. Established clients enjoy more relaxed payment terms of 30 days. Rates are generally based on us returning your work within 24 hours of receipt of payment. However, different turnaround times at different rates can easily be negotiated. There are also various ways you can pay. Refunds for cancellations are only paid pro-rata for work remaining to be done and carry an administration charge of 5% of the total fee. In lieu of a refund, clients may convert any service into an alternative Corballis Communication service. Refunds are paid by cheque made out to the original invoice payer. We reserve the right to cancel the job if circumstances necessitate. In this event, fees will be refunded in full, immediately and without deduction. For new clients, initial payment denotes agreement of the job specifications as expressed and approved by email prior to the job commencing. For established clients, email instruction to begin denotes agreement of the job specifications as expressed and approved prior to the email. Changes are always possible under mutual agreement but changes to the specifications will usually mean changes to the quote.

Free edit or consultation

We give each new client one free hour of our time, which may be a FREE edit of your first 250 words, giving you the chance to examine our work with no obligation. It may also include a FREE consultation, either face-to-face (in central London) or by email, to learn more about your writing needs and text requirements.

Payment methods

Payments can be made in Euros or US dollars using Paypal, or in Australian dollars, New Zealand dollars or British pounds sterling. For live exchange rates, open The Universal Currency Converter Services website. Our prefered method is wired payment but the following are possible:

Wire your payment: Please email or call us and we will give you the payee and bank details for a quick and easy bank-to-bank transfer. You can pay us in either Pounds Sterling (GBP) into the UK, New Zealand Dollars (NZD) in New Zealand, Australian Dollars (AUD) into Australia, or Euros (EUR) into Spain.

Pay by cheque or cash: You can post a cheque, or you can pay by cash if you are in London, Sydney, San Francisco, Wellington, Hong Kong or Tokyo and can arrange to meet your editor or a Corballis Communication associate face-to-face.

Pay by credit card: Pay by credit card using Paypal. Paypal uses SSL technology with an encryption key length of 128-bits to ensure security so that absolutely no-one will see your credit card details, not even us. Paypal is one of the most common payment methods on the Internet. It takes one minute to register with Paypal. Then all you need is a credit card and an email address. Our Paypal name is Corballis Communication and registered email is admin@corballis.com. Once you have paid, we will immediately receive an email telling us your name and your payment, directly from Paypal. You will also receive an email receipt.

Work with us?

English Rewrite currently has two editors with a tremendous passion for the English language and written texts. Occasionally we have so much work that we have to stay up at night or work weekends. Do you have the same passion? We may need a freelance editor to take up the slack.

Most of our clients are from non-native backgrounds and we work across a broad range of document types, including business documentation and copy as well as occasional high level post-graduate written works. The editing required is sometimes accompanied by brief instructional or explanatory notes. The texts are often interesting, and sometimes extremely complex or esoteric.

We may need a freelance occasional editor in a self-employed capacity to turn over jobs quickly and well, for which we pay a per word fee. We are London-based and welcome enquiries from flexible editors in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and other English-speaking countries, for occasional jobs received and delivered online to tight deadlines.

Successful individuals may have some background or experience in education or training. They will have meticulous attention to detail without being pedantic or excessively traditional. They will be aware of contemporary but formal English conventions and the fact that the language is organic, though they will be able to automatically cite traditional conventions, modern changes, second-language preferences surrounding such areas as idiom, as well as British and American and other geographical differences, in both structural conventions as well as lexis. They may be able to understand and identify the major second-language interference patterns. They will be perceptive, well educated and with considerable mental capacity. They will understand client perspectives and will be able to communicate effectively and empathetically. They will be able to produce texts that are formidably clear and accessible at both text and sentence level. They will be very computer literate. They will have a sound knowledge of most text-types; genres; functional aspects of language; style, register and tone; structural aspects of language and syntax; punctuation conventions; page formatting, report formatting, and word-processing styles; referencing, academic referencing and footnoting; and a general passion for the English language as text. They will probably also have a sense of humour.

We practise an equal opportunities policy. If you are interested in editing for us on a casual basis, please write to me, Tony Corballis, Head Editor stating why you think you are suitable. Please note that as at mid 2007 there is no opportunity to work with us and this is not likely to significantly change in the coming months. This site will be updated if this changes.
